The Claddagh Experience

Katie's Claddagh Cottage & Design Studio partners with Galway Bay Boat Tours and Brian Nolan from Galway Walks:

Discover what life was like in the West of Ireland over a hundred years ago with a guided walking tour of the old City, a boat trip on Galway Bay, followed by a narrated visit to Katie’s Claddagh Cottage.  Tea & scones included.

The Claddagh Experience starts with a leisurely stroll through Galway with cultural historian and storyteller, Brian Nolan, who will recount tales of Saint Brendan the Navigator, Christopher Columbus and the escapades of Spanish and Portuguese sailors as they moored their ships at the Spanish Arch and Long Walk.

We will cross Lough Corrib to the Claddagh Quay to board Galway Bay Boat Tours.

Here, you will join Ciaran Oliver, skipper and nephew of a long line of King’s of the Claddagh, to experience the City from a different perspective.

There is something magical about Galway bay, especially viewed from the sea.

On this part of your Claddagh journey you will learn about building a traditional Hooker boat, discover how generations of Claddagh villagers made their living, as well as have time to relax and enjoy the sights of the Burren and the Clare hills.

Jewels of light in Galway Bay.   A boat with diamonds laced around my shawl, stirred dreams that made a dolphin call. From a dappled boat’s bow came forth a bounty, landed in a tide that was once plenty.
— Extract from Reflections Upon Galway Bay, by Anna King

The Claddagh is one of the oldest recorded fishing village in Ireland, dating back to the 5th Century.  At one time, there were more than 200 fishing boats in the harbour.  Over a hundred years ago there was a regatta (gathering of boats), where 400 boats raced in Galway Bay.  There is a rival of this tradition with the yearly Bádóirí an Chladaigh festival (27th-28th May, 2017).  See: www.huiceiri.ie

After docking, we will pass the Claddagh church for more tales of mystery and intrigue, finishing up beside an authentic turf fire with tea, scones and a chat in the beautiful Katie’s Claddagh Cottage.
